Kilnhurst’s Penny Pile

Fund started by Kilnhurst Colliery workmen and ambulance committee for dependants of members in the Forces who were employed at the Colliery, paid out its final £400 on Friday. The fund is an example of how a little can become a lot.

The fund was become started in 1939 by voluntary contributions of a penny in the £1 from the miners’ wage packets. When the final count of the pennies was made it was found that £6,000 had been collected.

On Friday when the final distribution was made at the Colliery £400 was given to returned ex-Servicemen at the rate of £5 per man.

The money raised during the war was paid out to dependants at the rate of 5s. per week for a wife, 1s. per week for each child, and 2s. per week for non dependant relatives.
