The Association Cup
(now the F.A. Cup)
Kilnhurst 3 Grimethorpe 2
The above teams met in the first round of the qualifying stage of the English Cup last Saturday when Kilnhurst prove triumphant by 3 goals to 1. Grimethorpe having protested against the eligibility of W Thorpe, who played with Kilnhurst, and the protest having been upheld by the S.A., the game had to be replayed yesterday on the Kilnhurst ground. There was a good attendance, about 800 spectators lined the ropes, and a typical cup tie game was witnessed.
Kilnhurst won the toss, but Grimethorpe were soon on good terms with themselves, Francis scoring for them after only three minutes play.
During a hot attack Lowe knocked the ball down in the penalty area, but Lunn effected a fine save from Jenkinson, who took the penalty kick.
At the expiration of 30 minutes Scott scored a second goal for Grimethorpe, the ball bouncing over the heads of 3 defenders and entering the far corner of the net.
Just on the interval Lunn was really tense Ted and Burkinshaw getting possession right in front, drove the ball past Lunn into the net, and thus opened Kilnhurst’s account.
The interval arrived with Grimethorpe leading by two goals to one.
After much pressure Kilnhurst gained their due reward when they scored the equaliser, Dufty meeting a splendid centre from one, and beating Lunn with a capital shot at close quarters.
Time arrived with the score 2 goals each.
The referee at once ordered extra time, and after five minutes into the game and resume. Kilnhurst again held the upper hand and when 10 minutes had elapsed Dufty beat Lunn at close range and gave Kilnhurst the lead.
However with about 10 minutes to play the referee stopped the game on account of darkness.
Kilnhurst team: Williams; Caterer, Jenkinson; Harvey, Staniforth and Tingle; Merrill, Burkinshaw, Dufty, Glennon and Wood
Note: the game was replayed for the third time at Grimethorpe on Wednesday 16th October with Grimethorpe winning by four goals to nil.
