Kilnhurst Tragedy

Considerable sensation was caused in Kilnhurst, early yesterday morning, when it was known that the mutilated body of Mr T.W. Newbert, licensee of the Terrace Hotel, Hooton Road, having found lying across the metals near the Thrybergh Hall signal box, on the Great Central Railway.

The deceased had sustained shocking injuries, one arm being severed, and his head so badly battered that his identity was only discovered by a pocket knife found in his possession.

From the appearance and position of the body it is surmised that he was knocked down by late local train while returning home. He was, it is said, an interested spectator of the coursing at Upper Haugh on Thursday.

Mr Newbert is a member of a very well respected local family, and had done a good deal in his time for local sport.
