Curious Case At Kilnhurst

Late on Sunday evening a man who gave the name of George Stewardson was rescued from the canal at Kilnhurst, into which he had to all appearances accidentally fallen. The man was taken to the Ship Inn close by, where the landlord (Mr. Cuckson) had him stripped of his wet clothing, provided him with other garments, gave him a hot supper, and got him to bed. The man gave it out that he had come from Denaby, and let it be known that he was on the road. Pitying his condition, the landlord acquainted his customers with the case, and a collection was made, as a result of which 4s. 7d. was handed over to the “casual.”

Yesterday morning he was provided with fresh clothing, and, after having breakfast, left without having expressed any thanks for the favours done him. He said nothing as to his destination. It is believed the canal incident was a dodge to excite sympathy.
