Golden Wedding – Mr & Mrs George Cobb
A Happy Old Kilnhurst Couple
Fifty years of happy wedlock were completed on Sunday by Mr. and Mrs. George Cobb 46, Charles Street, Kilnhurst. A native of Nottinghamshire, Mr. Cobb has lived in Kilnhurst and district since 1870. A son of a farm labourer he came to Thrybergh Hall Colliery for 30 years and in 1900 entered the service of the Sheffield Corporation, retiring two years ago. He used to be a keen cricketer and helped to found the Kilnhurst Cricket Club. He also took a deep interest in football and was attached to several local clubs.
As an angling enthusiast Mr. Cobb has fished in almost every river in the North of England. For several years he was on the committee of the Mexboro’ Angling Association and for almost 40 years was a member of the Sheffield Angling Association. He is also greatly interested in brass bands and for many years played the tenor cornet in the Kilnhurst Alliance Band, now defunct.
Mrs. Cobb has lived in Kilnhurst for 60 years. She was born in Marshgibbon Buckinghamshire, and is a sister of Mr. T. Tompkins of Mexboro’, at one time a leading footballer and for some years secretary to the Mexboro’ Football Club. For many years Mrs. Cobb has been associated with the Wesleyan Church at Kilnhurst.
Mr. and Mrs. Cobb, who have lived in their present home for 46 years are aged 75 and 72 respectively.
