Kilnhurst Betting House

“We Were Giving Up Tomorrow”

“Harry Smith (40), miner, of 40, Carlisle Street. Kilnhurst, was summoned at Rotherham West Riding Police Court on Monday for having kept a betting house. His wife, Marion Smith 133), was summoned for assisting in the business.

A police-constable said on May 4th, on Instructions received, he kept observations on the house occupied by Harry Smith at 40, Carlisle Street, and, concealing himself, he had a full view of the house. He was unable however, to see the back door. Between 10-15 a.m. and 1-15 p.m. 41 persons visited the house; 26 men and 15 women. Some of the people walked straight into the house, others knocked at the door and handed something to Mrs. Smith, who came to the door. The persons who entered the house only stayed a few minutes and then left.

On May 6th between 10-30 a.m. and 1-30 p.m. 21 persons visited the house, 11 men, 12 women and two children.

On May 7th between 10-30 a.m. and 1-30 p.m. 43 persons went to the house, 26 men. 15 women and two children.

Witness was present with Inspector Holey and P.s. Downhill when the raid was made on May 20th and 15 slips were found and 18s. in cash. Mrs. Smith brought out eight slips and said “That’s all we have.” There was a scribbling pad on the table which anyone could see. Mrs. Smith. when charged, said “You were lucky to catch us to-day. We were giving up to-morrow.”

P.s. Downhill said when he charged Harry Smith, defendant replied “If there has been any betting carried on here it’s not been to my knowledge.” Harry Smith said he did not know the business was being carried on. Mrs. Smith had nothing to say.

Harry Smith was fined £5 and Mrs. Smith £2.
