Game Trespass at Swinton
Samuel Kelsall miner, of Swinton, Ben Dixon, trammer of Kilnhurst and Herbert Gedney, driver, of High Thorn, was charged with having trespassed is search of conies at Swinton on the 13th April.
Mr. Hickman prosecuted on behalf of Earl Fitzwilliam.
On the morning of the 13th April, Mr. James Pepper, farmer, of Swinton, saw the defendants, and he watched them go on to land in the occupation of Hr. John Smith. They had two terrier dogs with them and were hunting for rabbits. They were beating about, and they put a rabbit which the dogs chased. On seeing Mr. Pepper defendants ran away, anal they were seen by Police-constable Lund. Mr. Pepper shook his cap, and induced the doge to come to him. He then took possession of them, until two of the defendants came and fetched them.
It was contended, in defence, that there were no rabbits on the land in question.
The case against Gedney was dismissed and the other defendants were each fined 10s, including costs.
