Scholarship at Royal College of Music
Mr Henry Hinchliffe, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Hinchliffe, the Ship Inn, Kilnhurst, last Saturday won a viola scholarship tenable for one year, at the Manchester Royal College of Music.
The scholarship, which is valued at £36, may be extended a further year. There were 12 competitors, and the adjudicators, Principal Robert. J. Forbes and Professor Henry Holst, both remarked on the very high standard reached by them. The test was “Intrade” (arr. A. Moffat), and Mr. Hinchliffe was accompanied on the pianoforte by his elder brother, Mr. F. J. Hinchliffe, formerly organist of Kilnhurst Parish Church.
Mr. Hinchliffe, who was a gold medalist at Mexborough Musical Festival two years ago, is a pupil of Miss. L. Brameld, of Rotherham, and has reached the advanced grade, either with honours or distinction, in the Associated Board examinations for the L.R.A.M.
He is only 19 years of age but is well known throughout the district, having often appeared on the concert platform and for two years paid weekly visits to the Montagu Hospital.
